Brief Description
McAlister Institute is a drug and alcohol treatment and education agency which has been in existence since 1977 and is dual diagnosis capable. McAlister's CEO sets a very welcoming tone and always has. Word is definitely out on the street that you will not be turned away from McAlister. People know they will be accepted into one of McAlister's programs or staff will support them getting to a program that fits their needs. Staff are dedicated and hardworking, very open to working for the clients' best interests. Currently McAlister has 29 programs that are county wide.

All McAlister Institute programs are based on the 12-Step program of recovery. All fees are based on a sliding scale and no one is refused services due to the inability to pay.

McAlister is funded through San Diego County Alcohol and Drug Services, California ADP, Drug MediCAL, and third party contracts such as P-3 and SASCA. Third party insurances include Kaiser. Client fees and funds from McAlister’s Thrift Store, Bingo, and Kiva Catering also provide revenue. Additionally, McAlister has ongoing fundraisers including a golf tournament.

Services Offered
Outpatient Counseling: Individual and group counseling, individualized treatment planning with each client to develop a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. Fees are based on a sliding scale. Outpatient counseling also provides intensive day treatment services from three to five days per week. The program curriculum includes alcohol and drug education, recovery topic centered groups, life skills, job skills, parenting classes, individual and group counseling. Random drug testing is available, as well as an evening program.

Outpatient Detox Program: Two-week drug/alcohol education, group counseling, and 12-Step meeting attendance daily, followed by aftercare program. No referral needed. Fees based on sliding scale.

Intro Group: This program includes eight weeks of alcohol and drug education in a series similar to the PC-1000 diversion program. Employer and first-time offender referrals are accepted. No referral is required. The fee for this program is $190.
